An adaptation of Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth," Stuart Gordon's Dagon (2001) is an action-filled and quick-paced film with excellent performances by Ezra Godden and the late, great Francisco Rabal. Capturing the spirit of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth," the movie takes its main character, ship-wrecked Paul (Ezra Godden) deep into the decaying and decrepit Spanish fishing town of Imboca (literally Innsmouth) to save his girlfriend Barbara (the beautiful Raquel Meroño). It turns out that the townsfolk are not quite human and have given up on Christianity, in order to worship Dagon, who rewards them with plenty of fish and gold from the sea, as well as eternal life (as fish-men, if you can call that living!). Paul also encounters the sultry mermaid-like Uxia (played by Macarena Gómez), who had appeared in his dreams, and soon discovers secrets no sane man can know, about both the town and himself! This DVD is a wonderful addition to any Lovecraft fan's collection, from the director that brought you both Re-animator and From Beyond.
