Die Monster Die

Based on H.P. Lovecraft's "The Colour Out of Space" and starring Boris Karloff, this AIP feature was directed by Daniel Haller, the art director on AIP's previous Lovecraft adaptation, "The Haunted Palace" (based on The Case of Charles Dexter Ward). The countryside near Arkham is suffering from a "curse" that causes animals and vegetation to grow into abominations, brought on by the radiation from the strike of a meteorite nearby. Despite some notable changes to the story, like moving the story to England, among other things, the film does feature some notable setpieces, an excellent interpretation of Lovecraft's "blasted heath," figured as a huge unhealthy looking impact crater, and some great chills and creepy encounters with unnatural vegetation and other abominations that successfully evoke Lovecraft's story of cosmic horror and truly alien invasion. Plus, the always enjoyable Mr. Karloff is a pleasure to see on screen, as he slowly goes mad (and irradiated). No fan should miss this first screen adaptation of "The Colour Out of Space," Lovecraft's own favorite among his stories.
